Growing up in Victoria, B.C., Canada in a warm and loving environment, I learned the good in people is there if you look, and honesty, integrity and respect are virtues to be lived. It’s no surprise, then, that Flossie shares these values and expects to find them in others.
The Worley Village Mysteries are stories that wanted to be told with characters who wanted to be heard, and happily I was the one to hold the pen. It’s my wish that children find enjoyment with Flossie, her friends, and the Worley way of life and see their values as worthwhile.
About the Books
Set in a miniature village within an early 1900’s department store, the Worley Village Mysteries bring to life the little people who live within those buildings when the store lights dim for the evening and they come out to explore their surroundings. Being quiet and still all day takes its’ toll, and soon enough night time meanderings and adventures begin. It’s a new world for the Worleys, all because the cat, Flossie, determined it was time to leave her family home each night to find what lay beyond those wells inside the department store. It turns out that trouble comes from within those walls, but that we will learn later.
We meet characters such as the McFarley family, with whom Flossie lives, whose daughter Melanie forms a strong alliance and learns to communicate with Flossie. Soon we find Sgt. Blue Tunic, a store mannequin, as guide and night-time protector of Melanie and Flossie in their wanderings. Miss Feathers, the head swan of the Worley moat swans, becomes a strong friend to Flossie and communicates with the village swans to warn of danger. It is when Flossie finds she can understand “swan-speak” as can Melanie, that adventures really begin. Whistling and purring replace words and all is understood.
The friends become protectors of the Worley way of life. Joined by the Royal Swan Magic, an unlikely mermaid in the department store pond, and Mrs. McFarley who decides to know everything happening in the village, they find ways to keep Worley safe from outsiders who often try to change their peaceful way of life. As the villagers, the swans and Flossie trust each other to always do the right things, their plans and adventures succeed in sending away the intruders and returning harmony to Worley Village.
